Chronic rhinosinusitis is a condition that affects about 10% of the Brazilian population, significantly impacting quality of life. Characterized by prolonged inflammation of the sinuses, the disease can cause symptoms such as congestion, facial pain, nasal discharge, and reduced sense of smell.

Allergist Ana Flávia Bernardes points out that chronic rhinosinusitis can have multiple causes, including viral infections, allergens, and pollution. “Many patients don’t realize the severity of their symptoms and end up living with them for years, which can lead to serious complications, such as more severe infections and respiratory problems,” warns the specialist.

Studies indicate that the disease is becoming increasingly prevalent in Brazil, especially in large cities, where environmental factors and lifestyle contribute to the rise in cases. Ana Flávia emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and proper treatment. “Treatment may include anti-inflammatory and antibiotic medications, as well as more advanced therapies, such as biological therapy and even interventions in conjunction with ENT doctors, like endoscopic nasal surgery in necessary cases,” she explains.

Awareness about chronic rhinosinusitis is essential to promote better management of the condition. In her consultations, Ana Flávia encourages patients to report all symptoms and consider the possibility of allergies as a contributing factor. “With the right approach, it’s possible to control the symptoms and improve quality of life,” she concludes.
